Prior authorization and appeals support

Prior authorizations (PA) take time away from patient care. Our support team ensures patients get their medications as quickly as possible by leveraging the electronic prior authorization platform CoverMyMeds® to automate PA requests. And, if you complete a broad authorization form, our team will complete and submit the PA to the plan on your behalf.

We can also help remove the administrative burden of appeals with our dedicated appeals team, made up of registered nurses. Our appeals team will draft personalized appeal letters, specific to each patient, for your approval and submission to the insurance plan. We’ve helped thousands of patients obtain coverage to medications with a previous PA denial and are successful in overturning an average of 80% of coverage denials. 1

Optum Savings IQ®

We help patients find the lowest prices for the most effective generic and brand medications. Using Optum Savings IQ, we proactively connect patients with all available financial resources in real time, so they can start the medications they need and stay on them. Support includes:

  • Foundation assistance and grants offered by nonprofit organizations or foundations that support people with specific health conditions.
  • Manufacturer copay cards that help reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs.
  • Free drug programs, depending on each manufacturer’s approval requirements and application process.

Optum Savings IQ delivered $892.7 million in financial assistance to patients in 2025.2

Specialty portals

Our provider portal allows your clinic to easily access prescription status, adherence tracking, request appeal assistance, patient-specific reporting including financial assistance and PA notifications and connect with Optum Specialty Pharmacy support via live chat with a clinician.

Our patient portal and app can help make it easier for your patients to manage their condition anytime, anywhere. They can request refills, track orders, make payments, access live chat and view or update account information.

94% of patients improved or maintained adherence with Optum Schedule My Fill and had 100% medication access for all therapies – meaning every enrolled patient received refills on time, without interruption.5
