Delivering care continuity for specialty and infusion therapy

Optum helps providers keep patients on therapy during travel, relocation or disruption through coordinated, nationwide infusion and specialty pharmacy support.

Ensuring therapy continuity during patient travel or displacement

Summer travel, temporary relocation or unexpected disasters can disrupt access to specialty and infusion therapies. That can be risky for your patients and add more work for your office staff as they coordinate medication delivery.

Care coordination for specialty and infusion patients

When your patients need their medication and they’re away from home, our pharmacy teams coordinate medication access, infusion scheduling, nursing support and alternate sites of care directly with them.

Your patients also have 24/7 access to our pharmacy teams. This helps reduce missed doses, last‑minute office calls and treatment delays, which is critical for time‑sensitive therapies.

Nationwide pharmacy network supports continuous care, anywhere

Our pharmacies operate within a national network that allows care to continue across locations. If your patient is out of state — or in a region affected by disaster — and needs their medications, one of our other Optum pharmacy locations can step in and deliver the medications to them. Your patient won’t have to restart therapy or experience gaps in care.

This scale provides stability that regional pharmacies often cannot match — particularly during emergencies.

Infusion pharmacy support across various care settings

Optum Infusion Pharmacy supports patients across multiple sites of care so therapy continues if your patients are temporarily relocated. Most of the time, you don’t need to reroute prescriptions or manage logistics, we’ll do it for you.

Care coordination includes:

  • 800+ Optum‑employed infusion nurses
  • 28 Optum Infusion Pharmacy locations nationwide
  • 60+ Optum and FlexCare Infusion Centers ambulatory infusion sites across 19 states; this flexibility helps reduce missed infusions
  • 140+ contracted home health agencies extending nursing coverage across all 50 states2
  • Redundant cleanrooms and pharmacy operations designed to help prevent disruptions in care during regional or national events

Specialty pharmacy support for complex therapies and medications

Our skilled specialty pharmacy teams will work with patient’s insurance plan to coordinate vacation coverage options, Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) exceptions, and other complexities so patients can rest easy through their travels.

  • Patients have access to our pharmacist support 24/7, regardless of where their travels take them, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. territories.
  • Our clinicians can assist patients with questions on medication storage and handling during travel.
  • 15 Optum Specialty Pharmacy locations serve all 50 states through a centralized specialty pharmacy model.

Maintaining consistent access to therapy during disruption

As part of an integrated health services organization, Optum works closely with manufacturers, distributors and supply partners to maintain strong medication access across the country. With this scale, we can proactively manage supply challenges and navigate medication shortages more effectively than smaller organizations, helping minimize disruptions to patient care. When shortages occur, our established relationships and purchasing capabilities support continued access to many therapies.

Built for continuity and provider efficiency

When patients travel or are displaced, Optum Infusion Pharmacy and Optum Specialty Pharmacy provide a level of coordination, scale and redundancy that helps protect therapy continuity. For providers, that means fewer disruptions, fewer urgent calls and confidence that patients remain supported — no matter where they are.
