Delivering best practice care through advanced clinical point-of-care decision support
The sum of medical knowledge is increasing at unprecedented rates - doubling every 73 days.* As a result, clinicians are increasingly grappling with an overwhelming amount of information, making it nearly impossible to perfectly recall the most recent clinical guidance when meeting with their patients.
To help meet this challenge, Optum® has created a new, advanced point-of-care decision support tool, Clinical Assistant. It can instantly deliver a concise summary of the most up-to-date guideline-directed recommendations, specific to each patient’s conditions. Our solution integrates seamlessly within the provider’s existing EHR workflow, freeing up time for physicians to concentrate on patient care.

Key features

Clinical Assistant FAQ
Clinical Assistant offers recommendations for type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure (HF), hyperlipidemia, asthma and migraine. Additional conditions are in development.
The content is based on trusted, accredited professional medical society guidelines (ADA, AHA, ACC, GOLD, GINA) and is transformed from text to structured logic by our expert team of clinical informaticists.
Clinical Assistant is updated whenever new guidelines are published, to always stay current.
The provider can launch Clinical Assistant directly from the patient’s chart during an ambulatory encounter. Patient-specific clinical data from the EHR are extracted in real time and rapidly applied to evidence-based algorithms within our CDS engine. This process generates guideline-based recommendations that are immediately displayed within the app for the provider's review. The provider makes their choice, and the decision is saved back to the patient’s chart to be signed as part of the standard clinic ordering workflow. All of these actions occur within the provider's existing EHR workflow.
Clinical Assistant currently integrates with Epic and Altera TouchWorks, with future plans to integrate with eClinicalWorks and athenahealth.
