Infusion therapy appeals: Get extra support

For providers treating patients prescribed immunoglobulin (IG) therapy, insurance denials can create significant administrative challenges.

Prior authorization requirements, medical necessity reviews and coverage restrictions may delay treatment and increase workload for provider offices. When patients rely on ongoing IG therapy, delays in coverage can also affect continuity of care and create uncertainty for both patients and caregivers.

Why appeals matter

For patients who receive IG therapy, timely access to treatment is often a critical component of their care plan.

That means a denied claim is more than a paperwork issue. Coverage delays can lead to treatment delays, which then requires providers and staff to spend valuable time gathering documentation, communicating with health plans and navigating complex appeal requirements.

The complexity behind an appeal

Appeals for IG therapies frequently require detailed clinical documentation, individualized medical necessity justification and supporting evidence from published medical literature. The process may involve time-intensive steps like:

  • Reviewing the reason for the denial
  • Developing patient-specific appeal materials
  • Submitting required documentation
  • Following up with health plans through multiple stages of review

That’s a lot to ask of provider offices that already work hard to balance patient care and administrative demands.

Supporting a more efficient appeals process

When specialized appeals support is available, providers may be able to reduce the administrative burden associated with coverage denials while helping patients maintain access to prescribed therapies.

Clinical review, evidence-based appeal development and ongoing communication with health plans can help streamline the process and support more efficient resolution of coverage challenges.

Helping providers navigate IG therapy appeals

Optum® Infusion Pharmacy helps providers navigate appeals for IG and other infusion therapies by managing the process from initial denial through final determination.

Our appeals team includes registered nurses and patient navigators with more than 100 combined years of clinical experience. Each appeal is supported by a customized clinical letter, cited medical literature and ongoing follow-up with the health plan.

In the first quarter of 2026, 8 out of 10 denials were overturned through the Optum Infusion Pharmacy appeals process.* By managing appeals on behalf of providers, we help reduce administrative burden and support timely access to therapy for patients who need it most.
