Service

Community Care Services for Veterans

We ensure that our nation’s Veterans have access to the right care, at the right time and in the right setting.

Committed to our nation’s Veterans

We aim to give Veterans greater choice over their healthcare through the VA Community Care Network. With the Veteran’s approval, VA medical staff can authorize and schedule care from a community care provider.

Key benefits

We serve 36 states, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Patients can expect these benefits.

Less travel

Our expanded VA Community Care Network makes it easy for patients to get needed care.

Better wait times

Veterans see improved wait times and have better access to care.

Improved patient experience

Community care providers ensure patients of convenient, timely care.

Increased patient satisfaction

Patients are more satisfied with the process and the level of care they receive.

How the network works

Eligible beneficiaries have access to a robust network of high-quality providers. The program works in concert with the VA to ensure the best possible care. Patients are then referred to convenient, timely care by the VA.

Tailored solutions for Veteran care

Optum leveraged our extensive network and relationships across UnitedHealth Group and beyond to contract with a high-quality, stable and high-performing provider network of more than 2.2 million care sites.

They deliver a breadth of services and longevity of coverage to enhance Veterans’ experience with the VA Community Care Network. Care includes medical, behavioral, chiropractic, skilled nursing, eye, pharmacy, dental and other complementary services like tai chi and hypnotherapy.

Since February 2021, Optum has served as surge support for VA scheduling activities. This ensures that Veterans are scheduled for care in the community in a timely manner.

We use data analysis to minimize the overall appointment scheduling time for the VISNs supported. To date, Optum has received more than 5.9 million referrals and scheduled more than 232,000 appointments.

Optum provides VA and providers with a self-service portal to assist in activities such as referral review, claims payment details, and training and resource materials.

Through the portal, Optum offers VA reporting and Veteran assist tools that support the Veterans served through the Community Care Network.

The provider portals have self-service capabilities that include chat features with a customer service agent, review of referral and/or claims payment details.

Optum Customer Service teams have answered more than 2.2 million calls from VA Community Care Network providers and VA staff. We also established a specific call center for dental providers, urgent care eligibility and VA staff inquiries.

Optum pays medical, dental and pharmacy claims for VA Community Care Network (VA CCN) providers. Since the program’s initiation, Optum has processed more than 29.2 million claims.
