What is e-prescribing?

Electronic prescribing, or e-prescribing, is the process of electronically sending a prescription that is accurate and error-free directly to a pharmacy. If your electronic health record (EHR) system allows for e-prescribing, you can send secure prescription requests to Optum Home Delivery.

Ensure prescriptions are accurate and secure

Before submitting prescriptions electronically:

  1. Verify your EHR software is certified for e-prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS).
  2. Check the patient's benefit plan for prescription coverage. 
  3. Identify possible lower-cost medication alternatives using real-time benefits check data, as provided by Optum PreCheck My Script®.
  4. Submit an e-prior authorization (ePA) using your preferred PA software, such as CoverMyMeds® and Surescripts®.
  5. Submit your e-prescriptions to Optum Home Delivery Pharmacy.
